The Brunswick Hat
by Iris @hookandlight
The Brunswick hat is inspired by our local neighbourhood, urban yet close to nature with a laid back and artistic community.
The hat is designed to be slouchy and relaxed and is worked with simple colour work diamonds. The pattern is worked in the round and uses approximately 5x 20g skeins of DK weight yarn, including a pompom.

Yarn:5x 20g skins of DK weight in different colours. Get the Brunswick Mini skein set in our shop here!
Needles:3.5mm circular needles for the ribbing, 4.5mm circular needles for the main pattern. or needles required to get gauge.
Gauge:10cm (4 inches) = 19 sts, 23 rows
· K (knit)
· K2tog (knit two stitches together)
· P (purl)
Sizing:The pattern is designed to fit an adult head, measuring 58cm (23 inches) in diameter. With the suggested gauge, the unstretched and blocked hat, measures 48cm (19 inches) in diameter and 28cm (11 inches) in length. The sizing can be easily adjusted by adding or removing stitches in multiples of 8.
With ribbing needles cast on 96 stitches and join to work in the round.
Work 8 rows of K1 P1 ribbing in main colour (MC).
Switch to main needles and K 1 row.
Work the pattern and crown shaping decreases as shown in the chart.
Note: The chart is read from the bottom upwards, with each round going from right to left.
Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread the yarn tail through the remaining live stitched and pull taut to close the hole.
Weave in the ends.
Wash and block. I like to block my hats over a bowl to remove creases left from the decreases.
Optional: Use the remaining yarn to make a multiple coloured pompom and attach. Depending on your gauge and hat size you should have enough yarn remaining (from an initial 100g) to make a large 8cm (3 inch) diameter pompom.
